Filipino High School Students in U.S. Government Study Abroad Program Visit U.S. Embassy

Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney met with 36 high school students participating in the Youth Exchange Study (YES) program, a U.S. Government-funded program that provides scholarships for students to study for a year in the United States. The program is being implemented in the Philippines by the American Field Service-Philippines (AFS-P) and its alumni association.
High school students in the Youth Exchange Study (YES) program listen to remarks from Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney during a visit to the U.S. Embassy. The YES program provides full scholarships to study for one year in the U.S. to secondary school students from countries with significant Muslim populations. The Filipino participants represent a variety of cultures, religions, and backgrounds.
Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney shakes hands with high school students who are getting ready to fly to the United States for a year of study on a U.S. Government-funded scholarship program. During their one-year stay in the U.S., the students will live with host families, attend school, learn about American society, acquire leadership skills, and educate Americans about their country and culture.
Ambassador Kenney spoke about the importance of education with students from the Youth Exchange Study (YES) program and their teachers. After the students return to the Philippines, AFS Philippines conducts follow-on activities encouraging them to take the leadership skills they acquired during the program and apply them in their communities as they continue their studies and begin participating in civil society.
