Cebu Communities Benefit from Dedication of Civic-Minded Youths in U.S. Embassy Democracy Summer Fest

Students from the Civic Engagement Module of the U.S. Embassy's "Democracy Summer Fest" camp worked with local NGOs on service projects in Cebu City from May 17-21. Here, students work with a local cooperative that sews fabric scraps into clothing that are sold to raise money for the community. During the Democracy Summer Fest, Filipino and American instructors helped students explore how to use their unique talents to promote democratic values and human rights awareness.
Nearly 50 students from across the Philippines attended the Civic Engagement Module of the "Democracy Summer Fest" camp in Cebu City from May 17-21. The Democracy Summer Fest is a three-week program that teaches students to use their unique talents to further democracy and human rights. The program has three modules: Arts, Civic Engagement, and Leadership.
Democracy Summer Fest students in Cebu divided into small groups that focused on four aspects of civic engagement: micro-enterprises for the poor; waste management and the environment; children in conflict with the law; and shelter efforts. Here, a student spokesperson presents her group's goals for the five-day Civic Engagement Module, which was co-sponsored by the International Visitors Program-Philippines Alumni Group (IVP-Phils).
Several students worked with the Cordova/Guadalupe Cooperative, a community group that benefits the many families living in the area who have grouped together to create several micro-enterprises. Here, course instructors Rebekah Drame of the U.S. Embassy and Dr. Eldiberta Bala and Dr. Rene Gayo from the IVP-Phils group present a gift to representatives of the Cordova/Guadalupe Cooperative.
At the Cordova/Guadalupe Cooperative, students learned how micro-enterprises work and saw its positive effects on the community. Here, Democracy Summer Fest students assist the jewelry-making enterprise by helping make necklaces. The five-day Civic Engagement Module held in Cebu from May 17-21 was co-sponsored by the International Visitors Program-Philippines Alumni Group (IVP-Phils).
One group of students at the U.S. Embassy-sponsored Democracy Summer Fest's Civic Engagement Module spent the day in Barangay Luz, where they participated in an environmental "cleanup day" where they learned about separating trash, recycling, waste, and the environment. The U.S. Embassy's Democracy Summer Fest is a three-week program that teaches students to use their unique talents to further democracy and human rights.

Here, a group of students visit the juvenile detention center with the Balay Pasilungan NGO. The Democracy Summer Fest participants spent time with the children to learn about re-integration back into society and to provide good role models for the youths.
Democracy Summer Fest participants in the Civic Engagement Module held in Cebu City visited the Pagtambayayong Center for Appropriate Technology. Here, they learn how bricks are made to build low-income housing for poor families in the area. In the three modules of the U.S. Embassy's Democracy Summer Fest program - Arts, Civic Engagement, and Leadership -- Filipino and American instructors helped students explore how to use their unique talents to promote democratic values and human rights awareness.
