U.S., AFP Medical Mission Serves Children, Families in Luuk, Jolo

Two U.S. soldiers teach local children the classic American game of "Duck, Duck, Goose" during a Medical Civic Action Program (MEDCAP) at Luuk Elementary School in Jolo, Mindanao on May 14. The MEDCAP was sponsored by the Armed Forces of the Philippines and U.S. Military in cooperation with the local government. Nearly 1,000 residents attended, many bringing their children for checkups, shots, dental work, and minor surgery.

A local Luuk resident gets dental work during a May 14 Medical Civic Action Program (MEDCAP). Doctors from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, U.S. Military, Sulu Dental Association, and Auturas Hospital donated their time, equipment, and supplies to serve nearly 1,000 local residents.

Volunteers from the Philippine Red Cross, Population Office, and Integrated Provincial Health Office helped register patients, distributed supplies, and organized games for children while they waited to see the doctors.

This is the 19th MEDCAP the two militaries have offered together on Jolo Island in the last seven months.
The line of residents waiting to enter the May 14 Medical Civic Action Program (MEDCAP) at Luuk Elementary School in Jolo stretches down the street. Many residents said it was the first time they had been to a doctor in their lives. Doctors from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, U.S. Military, Sulu Dental Association, and Auturas Hospital donated their time, equipment, and supplies to serve nearly 1,000 local residents.
After getting medical work done and checkups for her children at the May 14 Medical Civic Action Program (MEDCAP) in Luuk, Jolo, a local woman picks up free gifts, such as an umbrella, baseball cap, reading materials, and backpacks and school supplies for children. The MEDCAP was sponsored by the Armed Forces of the Philippines and U.S. Military in cooperation with the local government. Nearly 1,000 residents attended, taking advantage of free checkups, vaccinations, dental work, and minor surgery.

The two partners have recently dug four wells in Jolo, and are currently building a community center in Panamao along with eight high school classrooms.
