Ambassador Kenney Honors the Valor of U.S., Filipino World War II Vets

Ambassador Kristie Kenney hugs a World War II veteran who traveled from Chicago to participate in Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor), the annual observance of the surrender of American and Filipino forces to the Japanese Imperial Army on April 9, 1942, and the start of the Bataan Death March. Ambassador Kenney spoke during the moving ceremony at the Dambana ng Kagitingan (Shrine of Valor) on Mt. Samat, Bataan.

World War II veterans stand at attention during the playing of the Filipino and American national anthems at the annual ceremonies in honor of Araw ng Kagitingan, the date of the surrender of American and Filipino forces to the Japanese Imperial Army. The ceremony was held on Mt. Samat, Bataan, an area that saw one of the most vicious battles in the Pacific during World War II. The site is now marked by the Shrine of Valor, which includes a large white cross and a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Ambassador Kristie Kenney speaks with World War II veterans after the ceremonies marking the fighting in Bataan and the start of the Bataan Death March. During the ceremony, Ambassador Kenney spoke about the valor of the Filipino and American soldiers who fought during the battle, and of the brave Filipino citizens who tried to help the hungry, thirsty, and dying soldiers during the week-long march to Capas, Tarlac. ."
