Mindanao Students, Women's Groups Receive Donations from US Government Zamboanga schoolchildren received backpacks and school supplies from U.S. Embassy, U.S. Army, and Armed Forces of the Philippines representatives during a December 13 program at the Islamic Institute of the Philippines in Zamboanga. The U.S. State Department's Shared Futures Program has partnered with the Armed Forces of the Philippines to reach out to Muslim communities in Mindanao and donate supplies for education and microenterprise programs. The backpacks were donated as part of the U.S. Shared Futures Program, which has a goal of distributing 5,000 educational kits to Filipino schoolchildren. More than 600 Muslim students participated in a reading program led by officials of the U.S. Army and Armed Forces of the Philippines in Zamboanga. The schoolchildren also received backpacks as part of the U.S. Shared Futures Program. Zamboanga City's Vice Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco read aloud to the madrassah students while a U.S. Army official displayed pictures in a children's book. The children raptly listened to the stories during the December 13 ceremony, which was held on the Filipino Teachers' Day to honor the importance of education. Madrassah students pose with a hand-drawn American flag and U.S. Army representatives in Zamboanga after the reading program, which was hosted by the Islamic Institute of the Philippines. Leaders of the Bangsa Moro Women Peace and Development Foundation (BMWPDF) accept a donation of sewing machines from representatives of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the U.S. Army, and the U.S. Embassy during a December 13 ceremony in Zamboanga. BMWPDF, a Muslim women's nongovernmental organization, received 176 sewing machines for livelihood projects in Mindanao. BMWPDF is a USAID partner representing 17,000 Muslim women in the ARMM and Zamboanga City. Hundreds of sewing machines donated by the U.S. Shared Futures Program are loaded onto trucks for delivery to the Bangsa Moro Women Peace and Development Foundation and the Philippine Muslim Women Council. The U.S. Shared Futures Program is distributing 600 sewing machines and supplies in Muslim communities throughout the Philippines to encourage microenterprise in underdeveloped communities. Representatives of eight Muslim women's nongovernmental organizations were present at the turnover ceremony to receive donations of sewing machines and supplies. The machines were destined for use by women and families throughout Mindanao.
