International Education Week Brings High School Students and American Diplomats Together The highlight of International Education Week was the World History and Geography Bee, a competition hosted by the U.S. Embassy for more than 200 students from 15 Manila-area high schools. Here, Araullo High School students show their school spirit before the competition begins. Quizmaster Debbie Pedroso from the U.S. Embassy Consular Section poses a question in Round One as students from Santa Isabel College work as a team to find the correct answer. The World History and Geography Bee included more than 50 questions presented over three rounds of competition. The final round included the top five scoring teams. Students from 15 Manila-area schools packed the U.S. Embassy ballroom during the World History and Geography Bee, eager to show their knowledge and teamwork. The participating schools each brought 10 students to the Embassy competition, where the energy and excitement levels were high on the part of both the students and the Embassy officials. All participating schools received special gifts from the U.S. Embassy, including a generous selection of books and resource materials for each school's library, a one-year subscription to "English Teaching Forum" magazine for their classrooms, and unique gifts with the U.S. Embassy logo for the students. Here, Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer Rebekah Drame presents gifts to representatives of Philippine Pasay Chung Hua Academy's team. The students were thrilled to have special guest Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Scott Bellard announce the five highest-scoring teams. Here, he poses with the winning school, San Beda College, who had the most points in the competition and impressed everyone with their students' teamwork and knowledge. All the participating students were invited to enjoy a pizza party after the competition. Here, students from Manuel Quezon High School show off the U.S. Embassy baseball caps they received as special prizes. Other gifts included U.S. Embassy mugs, T-shirts, and umbrellas. U.S. Embassy Consul General Richards Haynes and a panel of U.S. Embassy Consular Officers address a group of university recruiters, local school officials, and interested students at a forum held at the U.S. Embassy on October 21 as a preview to International Education Week events. This forum covered issues such as changes in U.S. visa laws that affect students, and the visa application process in general. U.S. Embassy Cultural Affairs Officer Bruce Armstrong listens to questions and comments from parents and students interested in studying in the U.S. at a November 16 discussion sponsored by the Philippine-American Education Forum (PAEF). Officers from the Embassy's Consular Section attended to answer questions on how to apply for student visas. The discussion was part of the U.S. Embassy's program for International Education Week, which also included officers from the U.S. Embassy visiting 19 Filipino high schools to talk about the importance of education and international exchange programs. Officers recounted their personal experiences with life abroad and responded to questions about how to study in the U.S., how to pay for an American education, and how to look for and choose a school.
