Statement: Preliminary Investigation of Alleged Rape Incident Involving U.S. Marines
Local legal counsel for the six U.S. Marines alleged to have been involved in the rape of a Philippine citizen appeared today at the Office of the City Prosecutor at the Hall of Justice in Olangapo City. The physical presence of the Marines today was not required by the Office of the City Prosecutor, although all six remain in U.S. custody in the Philippines. No charges have been filed against the Marines.
The U.S. is working with Philippine authorities under the precepts of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), and will cooperate closely with them to ensure this case is handled fairly and that justice is done. Philippine and U.S. investigations into the incident are continuing, in accordance with the VFA.
It is a principle of Philippine and American law that anyone accused of a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The U.S. remains committed to seeing that justice is served. We await the results of both the Philippine and U.S. investigations, and look forward to a fair and impartial process that can provide for an appropriate and just outcome once the results of the investigation are released.
