American, Filipino communities honor fallen soldiers at Veterans Day ceremony in Manila The American and Filipino military communities came together on November 11, 2005 to commemorate Veterans Day, an American holiday in honor of all veterans who fought to preserve peace. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hosted a ceremony at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial to honor veterans of World War II. Here, honorees from a Filipino women's auxiliary veterans group participate in the event. Commodore Rogelio Dayan (left), the official representative of President Arroyo and the Administrator of the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office, salutes the fallen soldiers of World War II during a wreath laying ceremony. Pictured with him are U.S. Embassy Charge d'Affaires Paul Jones (second, left) and other honorees. Major General Hermogenes Esperon, Jr. (left), Commanding General of the Philippine National Army, speaks with U.S. Embassy Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Scott Bellard (center) and visiting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Eric John. The Veterans Day ceremony was attended by American and Filipino veterans and their families, government officials, and other international guests. A representative of the Philippine National Army plays the traditional "taps" music to signify the end of the ceremony. "Taps" is an American military bugle call that is traditionally played by a lone musician to honor fallen soldiers. During World War II, more than 406,000 American and Filipino soldiers gave their lives to preserve peace and freedom; more than 17,000 soldiers are buried at the Manila American Cemetery.
