Deputy Chief of Mission Mussomeli visits Basilan, Zamboanga

 

U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Joseph Mussomeli and American soldiers belonging in the U.S-Philippines Joint Special Operations Task Force (JSOTF) hold young wards in a center for abandoned and neglected children in Zamboanga City. JSOTF regularly donates basic goods and cash to the center, which is a joint project of the Foundation for the Development of Children, Inc. and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

In his remarks at the closing ceremony of the joint U.S.-Philippines military Balance Piston exercise in Basilan, the DCM said: “ The purpose of Balance Piston is clear: the United States and the Philippines working together to create a safer and more secure environment in which all people can live, work, and prosper.”

The DCM, (from right:) Basilan Governor Wahab Akbar, Livelihood Enhancement and Peace (LEAP) Program Manager Noel Ruiz, and Nestor Banaga of Alliance for Mindanao Off-Grid Renewable Energy (AMORE) view the map of Minadanao towns provided electricity through the USAID-assisted AMORE program.

Basilan’s Begang National High School Principal Norma Taruc, an officer of the school’s parent-teacher’s association, and the DCM watches as Student Body President Aprilyn Bontia surfs the Internet on a computer that USAID donated through the Computer Literacy and Interconnectivity (CLIC) Program.

The DCM presents to Ms. Taruc a CLIC certificate of completion in a ceremony attended by PTA members.

Jacki Lyons of U.S. Embassy’s Joint U.S. Military Assistance Group (JUSMAG) holds a world map and explains the big world that reading opens to everyone. USAID’s Enhanced and Rapid Improvement of Community Health (EnRICH) program assists CCF and other organizations to increase the practice of modern family planning methods and contributes to the reduction of maternal, infant and child mortality in the ARMM.
