Educational Institutions in the Philippines

The Philippines offers a broad range of educational opportunities for resident Americans. With the exception of the International School of Manila (ISM), the school year is usually from June to March, with summer holidays April-June. English is the language of instruction in most schools in the Philippines. 

Please note: The US Embassy does not recommend particular schools or send representatives to visit and evaluate educational institutions. The educational institutions listed below are popular with expatriates living in the Philippines. For additional informatoin check with the State Department's Office of Overseas Schools.

 

Pre-Schools and Nursery

There are many English-language schools available for children aged 2 to 6 years old. All of the preschools offer a variety of activities and instruction for the preschool child. The schools are often located in private home neighborhoods and private subdivisions and feature small class sizes. The minimum enrollment age is generally from 2-1/2 years, although some preschools admit children at 18 months of age. Some of the most popular schools include:

Brent International School Manila is an international, co-educational day school for students in nursery through Grade 12 and is associated with the Episcopal Church in the Philippines. More than forty-five nationalities are represented in the student body at Brent. A full International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is offered in the Upper School (or High School). Brent also offers Middle School and Lower School programs. The Special Learning department offers extra assistance to those students identified as learning different. These students receive assistance with their language acquisition and mathematics skills, as well as with their speech and occupational therapy needs.

The International School Manila is a private, co-educational program for Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The curriculum is American-based and courses are primarily college-preparatory including Advanced Placement Courses and the International Baccalaureate Diploma program. Instruction is in English. The testing program includes the SAT and Achievement Tests of the College Board, the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, the American College Test, the Secondary Schools Admission Test and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. The School also services students with special needs. The School also provides an extensive English as a Second Language (ESL) Program based on need for those whose first language is not English.

The British School in Manila accepts students from age 5 through 12 or 13 (second year high school) and has an enrollment of about 300 students. Class sizes are about 15 each. It follows the British system, is staffed solely with expatriate British teachers under a British headmistress, and offers a wide variety of after-school activities. The school has recently opened a new campus at Fort Bonifacio Global City.
