History of the TJIC

The history of U.S. Government library service in Manila dates back to the end of World War II when, on September 26, 1945, the United States Information and Education Service Library opened in the Soriano Building at Plaza Cervantes.  Since then, it has relocated several times: in 1947 to the Veterans Building (formerly the Heacock Building), on Escolta and David Streets; in 1950 to the Veterans Building on Padre Faura and A. Mabini Streets, Ermita; in 1963 to Magsaysay Boulevard, Sta Mesa; in 1970 to G. Araneta Blvd., Quezon City; and in 1980 to Buendia  Avenue Extension (now Senator Gil Puyat Avenue), Makati City.  The name of the library has also changed over time:  to Thomas Jefferson Library (1962); to the Thomas Jefferson Cultural Center (1970); and to the Thomas Jefferson American Center (1997).

Renamed the Thomas Jefferson Information Center in March 1999, this information service about the United States is now located on the ground floor of the Annex Building on the historic grounds of the U.S. Embassy on Roxas Boulevard.
