American Studies Resource Centers
The Public
Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy and designated universities in various
regions in the Philippines and the American Chamber of Commerce in Cebu
have established American Studies Resource Centers (ASRCs) to provide
information about the United States in cities outside Metro Manila not
served by the Thomas Jefferson Information Center. These ASRCs and American
Corners maintain a collection of books, videotapes and periodicals related
to studies about the United States for the academic community of the host
institution and others such as faculty members and students of other universities,
professionals in both government and private organizations, and agencies.
The ASRCs also co-sponsor cultural activities such as exhibits and lectures
by American specialists and an annual Seminar on American Studies for
members of the community who have a strong personal/professional interest
in updating their knowledge about the United States. Policies for the
use of the ASRCs are determined by the host institution.
The two established in Mindanao in 2003 are called American Corners,
but have the same objectives.
