U.S. Agency for International Development

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is the principal agency responsible for managing U.S. Government assistance programs in more than 100 developing countries around the world. Under the overall foreign policy direction of the Secretary of State, USAID helps build and sustain democratic, well-governed states that respond to the needs of their people, reduce widespread poverty, and conduct themselves responsibly in the international system.

The United States has a long-standing and successful development partnership with the Philippines. Over the past 30 years, U.S. Embassy Manila's USAID Mission has provided more than US$5 billion in total assistance, making the United States the largest grant donor to the Philippines.

USAID/Philippines’ current programs support local efforts to promote the development of a more peaceful and prosperous Philippines that can better provide an improved quality of life and future for all Filipinos. Our assistance programs in the Philippines link directly to U.S. Government global foreign assistance priorities:

Peace and Security - Approximately 60% of USAID's annual funding is focused on conflict-affected areas of the southern island of Mindanao through programs that expand zones of socio-economic development, peace, and security.

Governing Justly and Democratically - USAID programs support efforts to strengthen democratic institutions, processes, and the rule of law, including judicial reform and local government strengthening efforts.

Investing in People - In the health sector, USAID focuses on strengthening local governments' capacity to deliver health care, combating infectious diseases and improving the private sector's ability to provide health services. USAID's education program focuses on Mindanao and seeks to increase access to and quality of basic education services.

Economic Growth - Through economic reform and enterprise development programs, USAID promotes efforts to build a more competitive and productive economy that provides an improved investment climate for private investment and job creation. In the environment and energy sectors, USAID helps the Philippines improve the management of its deteriorating natural resources and promote increased energy efficiency.

Humanitarian Assistance - USAID provides support for natural disaster preparedness and relief by working in close partnership with the Government of the Philippines, the Red Cross, NGOs, the private sector, and the U.S. military.
